THE ORIGIN STORY
Cynthia Breazeal didn't just study robotics—she reimagined what robots could be.

As far back (yes the 90’s!) as 1997, as a PhD student at MIT, she created Kismet, a robot with expressive eyes, moving ears, and the ability to recognise and respond to human emotions. While the tech world was obsessing over processing speed and computational power, Breazeal was asking: Can a robot make you feel seen? - this is what makes her a Godmother.

Kismet could. It tracked faces, responded to tone of voice, and expressed curiosity, joy, even disapproval. Watching Kismet interact with humans wasn't like watching a machine—it was like watching a conversation between two beings trying to understand each other.

That work became the foundation of an entirely new field: social robotics.

Where others saw automation, Breazeal saw collaboration.

Where others saw efficiency, she saw relationship.

THE BUILDER
Breazeal didn't stop at theory—she built technology that lives in the world.

Jibo (2017): The world's first social robot for the home, a companion with personality, presence, and the ability to recognise family members. Jibo could dance, tell stories, take photos and made people feel less alone.

MIT Media Lab's Personal Robots Group: As founder and director, Breazeal leads research on how robots can support human health, learning, and wellbeing. Her team asks "how can robots help humans flourish?"

She proved social robotics isn't science fiction—it's infrastructure for a more humane technological future.

Her robots don't just respond to commands.

They respond to us.

The Breazeal Question: "What kind of future do we want to live in—and what role should robots play in getting us there?"

Her answer: Robots that see us, understand us, and help us thrive.
