IMOGEN RIVERS

Imogen Rivers recently completed her DPhil in Philosophy at the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI.

Her thesis, Robots from Venus, Robots from Mars, asks a quietly radical question: who is responsible when AI causes harm?

In part one, she turns to autononomous AI in sex robots. In part two, killer drones. Two vastly different contexts, one urgent through-line: how do we build regulatory frameworks that are both ethically sound and legally robust?

Her answer centres legal personhood as a vital tool for justice with real-world stakes.

Imogen is inspired by Emmy Noether, the mathematician who revealed a hidden connection between symmetry and the laws of nature. Elegance and rigour in equal measure.

Our ‘Future Godmothers’ strand profiles the young women shaping the future of AI and technology with ethics, creativity and care.
